InfoOn Jan. 2 with his family and friends in tow, UAW Local 402 retiree Ron Rhine was sworn in as a new member of the Ohio State House of Representatives.

“This is one of the proudest moments in my life. I can’t thank the UAW enough for all they have done for me. I will always keep my sisters and brothers in mind as I fulfill my duties as state representative,” said the newly elected representative from the 73rd District in Springfield, Ohio.

Rhine never realized when he hired in to the Springfield International Harvester plant in September 1956 what his future might bring.

After serving three years in the United States Marine Corps, Rhine returned to his job at International Harvester and became active in Local 402. He was elected steward, committeeman, and then president in 1973.

In 1977 he was appointed by Region 2A (now part of Region 2B) Director Ray Ross as an International Representative. He retired in June 1998.

At Rhine’s retirement dinner UAW Region 2B Director Lloyd Mahaffey said, “ Ron is a fine example of a person who dedicated his life to the UAW and its members. We are very proud of him.”

Ron continued to serve on many community boards, including School to Work, Mental Health, Urban League, United Way, and the Clark County Historical Board.

Ron is a member of the Clark County Democratic Party and was inducted into its Hall of Fame. He has been a very active member of the Springfield Area CAP Council since it was established in 1968.

When State Representative Dave Hartley was forced to retire because of term limits, Ron was encouraged to run for the office.

After conferring with Director Mahaffey, his local union leadership, CAP Council officers, family, and friends, Rhine embarked on the campaign of his life. Over the next 18 months, Rhine spent countless hours raising money, attending events, and doing all the things you need to do to get elected.
