Info | Burnside, who took over the job in 1993, served as prothonotary for the second-longest length of time in the county's history. Only Albert Slocum, who had the post from 1945 to 1963, held the office longer. Burnside submitted her resignation to Gov. Ed Rendell effective March 1, 2010.
Burnside took over as prothonotary on Jan. 4, 1993.
Her predecessor, Victoria Stefanko, retired in November 1992, and the position was taken over by chief deputy Aaron Doty.
Burnside, who was the second-ranking deputy in the office, announced her intention run in the special election in 1993 to fill the final two years of Stefanko's term.
Then-Gov. Robert Casey appointed Burnside to officially fill the vacancy, but her nomination was never acted on by the state Senate. (That requirement no longer exists due to changes in the state law a few years ago.)
In the May 1993 primary election, Burnside finished second on the Republican side to Glenn "Ace" Shupp, while Mary Dixon won the Democratic nomination. Then about a month before the election, both Shupp and Dixon withdrew from the election on the same day. County Republican leaders tabbed Burnside to fill the spot on the November ballot, while Democratic officials opted not to name anyone to replace Dixon.
