Phil Steele is the Republican candidate for the United States Congress in the First Congressional District. At the age of 58, Steele is running for Congress to restore faith in the two-party system in the First Congressional District where a single party has returned to Washington every election since the late 1950's.

Now redistricting has made the imbalance even more lopsided.

"The net effect," says Steele, "has been to further entrench a "safe" seat. This arrangement is grossly unfair to Democratic, Republican, and unaffiliated voters, and does enormous damage to the political process."

Connecticut's 1st District
It means that your vote is unlikely to make a difference. It means that the Congressional race will be of little interest to the public or press. It means that critical issues will not get the attention they deserve. It means that representative will not be held accountable to the extent he or she should.

Phil Steele will work for you 100% of the time, while his opponent, as a career politician, will work for himself on the time we're paying him.

Phil's Biography
Phil Steele grew up in Wethersfield and graduated from Amherst College. After earning a Masters Degree in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania, he taught English at Washington and Jefferson College.

He returned to Connecticut in 1976 as News Director of WLIS in Old Saybrook, and subsequently worked as a reporter for the Manchester Journal Inquirer.

Phil obtained a Law Degree from the University Of Connecticut School Of Law in 1978, and now has a practice in Hartford concentrating in discrimination and other employment issues.

From 1978 through 1992, Phil also was a weekend sportscaster on WTIC-AM 1080 and worked with his father, Radio Hall-of-Famer Bob Steele.

He has a son who is a professional engineer in East Windsor and a daughter who is an account executive for a business and technology consultancy in Atlanta.

Despite an 8 to 1 voter registration disadvantage, Phil won enough Democratic and Unaffiliated voters in his 1987 run for Mayor of Hartford to capture 43% of the vote.

In 1992, Phil won over 76,000 votes, the most since Ann Uccello came within 1,000 votes of beating incumbent Bill Cotter in 1970.
