Info | FERRISS, Orange, a Representative from New York; born at Glens Falls, Warren County, N.Y., November 26, 1814; completed preparatory studies; attended the University of Vermont at Burlington; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced practice in Glens Falls, N.Y.; justice of the peace 1838-1841 and 1845-1848; inspector of public schools in 1839 and 1840; corporation clerk 1839-1842; county judge and surrogate of Warren County 1851-1863; elected as a Republican to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses (March 4, 1867-March 3, 1871); chairman, Committee on Mines and Mining (Forty-first Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1870; appointed by President Grant as commissioner of southern claims and served from 1871 to 1877; Second Auditor of the Treasury from May 12, 1880, until his resignation on June 19, 1885; retired to Glens Falls, N.Y., where he died April 11, 1894; interment in Glens Falls Cemetery.
