| Info | Bob Henon, 42, is a lifelong resident of Northeast Philadelphia and has spent the majority of his adult life in the East Torresdale neighborhood of Philadelphia’s 6th Councilmanic District, where he resides with his wife, Jill, and their two young sons, Matt and Zack.
Bob’s personal integrity and desire to help others was forged early on during his four years of quality education at Northeast Catholic High School for Boys. It was shortly after graduation that he enrolled in and completed the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98 acclaimed, college-accredited Apprenticeship Program. Bob worked in the electrical field for a time before his natural leadership skills came to the fore. He quickly began his ascent up the union ladder, serving as a steward, sub-foreman and foreman before becoming a Business Representative for Local 98’s Sound and Communications Division. Bob’s outgoing personality and political acumen caught the attention of Local 98 Business Manager John J. Dougherty, who soon named him as the local’s new Political Director, a position in which he helped compose and lobby for legislation at every level of government that helped to ensure the future of Local 98’s membership. Bob also managed election day operations for endorsed candidates, educated and supervised campaign volunteers, and coordinated major campaign events. As an extension of his role as Local 98’s Political Director, Bob served as Chairman of the local’s Political Action Committee, as board member of the Electrical Mechanical Association, and as a delegate to the IBEW International Convention. Bob’s depth of experience as Local 98’s Political Director paved the way for his City Council candidacy, his first bid for political office.
As his outstanding professional reputation grew in political circles, Bob became a highly valued, in-demand political adviser to many notable candidates and elected officials alike, serving in numerous high-ranking capacities, including Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell’s Inaugural Committee; the 2003 Transition Team for Philadelphia Mayor John Street; state delegate for the Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO; a Vice Chairmanship of the National Young Democrats Labor Caucus; membership in the 2004 Pennsylvania College of Electors; as Labor Organizer for the Philadelphia Building Trades in the five county Greater Philadelphia region for the Seamus McCaffery for Pennsylvania State Supreme Court; and as regional labor organizer for several presidential campaigns; among other positions.
Although Bob’s successful career and reputation as a smart, ethical and effective political adviser has made him known and respected in the halls of power in Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Washington, D.C., his heart remains in Northeast Philadelphia and his long history of civic involvement in his community attests to his loyalty to his hometown roots.
In his various roles at Local 98, Bob has been involved in numerous pro bono neighborhood improvement projects in Northeast Philadelphia, including lighting the girls’ softball field at Archbishop Ryan, the mural of slain Police Officer Gary Skerski, the Viet Nam War Memorial and numerous other lighting projects at Father Judge High School, and lighting and electrical work at many area boys and girls clubs, including Parkwood, Bustleton, Torresdale (where Bob serves as assistant coach for boys’ sports), Frankford, Somerton, Rhawhurst and others. Bob also was involved in a major computer lab project at North Catholic High School , an Internet and electrical wiring project at St. Catherine’s School, and the rebuilding of the American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 146. Citywide, Bob is deeply involved with Local 98’s annual “Toys and Turkeys” fundraiser for needy families, the annual “Walk for Juvenile Diabetes,” Young Friends of the Variety Club, the Susan G. Komen “Walk for the Cure” to raise funds for breast cancer research, and numerous neighborhood clean-up projects. Most recently, Bob agreed to serve on the advisory committee of the annual “Gary Papa Run 4 Your Life” fundraiser to cure prostate cancer, an insidious disease which Bob himself recently beat.
