She received her B.A. in Psychology and Women's Studies at the University of Arizona in 1990 and has 15 units in her masters program. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and the National Golden Key Honor Society.
She was a member of the Sunnyside School Board from 1987 - 2002. She's a past president of the National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members, past president of the Arizona School Boards Association, past chair of Council of Urban Board of Education, a member of the Infant/Toddler Mental Health Coalition and has also served as a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials and the board of the National School Boards Association. She's a member of the National Organization for Women, the AZ Women's Political Caucus, and the Teenage Parent Program Advisory Committee, Parents as Teachers Advisory Committee and Juvenile Services Coordinating Council.
