Info | WOODCOCK, David, a Representative from New York; was born in Williamstown, Berkshire County, Mass., in 1785; attended the public schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar and practiced; moved to Ithaca, Seneca (now Tompkins) County, N.Y.; commissioned postmaster of Ithaca November 19, 1808; appointed master of the court of chancery in 1808; member of the State assembly in 1814 and 1815; appointed district attorney of Tompkins County in April 1817; surrogate and assistant attorney general of the State in 1817; president of the Cayuga Steamboat Co. in 1819; elected to the Seventeenth Congress (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1823); president and trustee of the village of Ithaca in 1823, 1824, and 1826; resumed the practice of law; again a member of the State assembly in 1826; took a prominent part in the Anti-Masonic Crusade and State Convention at Utica, N.Y., in 1827; elected to the Twentieth Congress (March 4, 1827-March 3, 1829); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1828 to the Twenty-first Congress; resumed the practice of his profession; died in Ithaca, N.Y., September 18, 1835; interment in the City Cemetery.
