InfoGovernor of the EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK, Chair of the European Systemic Risk Board, and Chair of the GHOS (Governors and Heads of Supervision) at the Bank for International Settlements since November 2011.

EARLY CAREER: Upon graduating Sapienza University in Rome in 1970 with a degree in Economics, Draghi continued to pursue a PhD at MIT (obtained in 1977) while professor of Economics at the the Universities of Padua, Trento and Venice (1975-1981). Appointed Executive Director of the World Bank in 1984, Draghi kept at the habit of crouching after all pursuits at once by simultaneously serving as professor of economics at the University of Florence for ten years until 1991.

Burnished with a reputation as a hard-charging, tireless worker, Draghi was appointed Director-General of the Italian Treasury (Dipartimento Del Tesoro) in 1991, working with Treasury Minister Carlo Ciampi to initiate difficult and wide-ranging structural reforms to meet EMU entry criteria, in particular, setting a "euro tax" and reducing a ballooning Italian deficit. His signature achievement during this period was to craft and have implemented legislation governing the Italian financial markets (called the "Draghi Law," a law still in effect today).

STINT IN PRIVATE BANKING: Draghi left government to take a position as Vice Chairman and Managing Director at Goldman Sachs from 2002 to 2005. One of his major marks at the investment bank was to champion derivative financing by governments and institutions to better manage their liabilities.

BACK TO GOVERNMENT: Draghi was then appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Italy (Banca d'Italia) on December 29, 2005 and made concomitantly Chairman of the Financial Stability Forum (renamed Financial Stability Board in early 2009) in April 2006 and Member of the Board of Directors at the Bank for International Settlements.

After a rocky run of the European Central Bank (ECB) by Jean-Claude Trichet during the worst of the world-wide recession begun in 2008, Draghi was chosen to become the next President of the ECB on June 24, 2011, officially succeeding Jean Claude-Trichet on October 29, 2011.
