Info | LYMAN, William, a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Northampton, Mass., December 7, 1755; was graduated from Yale College in 1776; served in the Revolutionary War; during Shays’ Rebellion was aide to General Shepard, with rank of major; member of the State house of representatives in 1787; served in the State senate in 1789; elected as an Anti-Administration candidate to the Third Congress and reelected as a Republican to the Fourth Congress (March 4, 1793-March 3, 1797); brigadier general of State militia 1796-1800; United States consul at London, England, from 1805 until his death in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, on September 22, 1811; interment in the cathedral at Gloucester, England, and later a monument was erected to his memory in the Old Cemetery, Northampton, Mass.
