InfoMatt Williams is a fourth-generation Californian with a track record of leadership and public service. Born in San Francisco, and raised in Pacifica, he attended college at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut, where he was captain and a member of the crew team that won the Dad Vail National Rowing Championships in Philadelphia. Matt’s first two-year assignment aboard a Coast Guard cutter patrolling the Gulf of Alaska resulted in two significant rescue missions involving a major harbor fire in King Cove, Alaska, and the grounding of a Soviet fishing trawler in the Bering Sea. During his twenty years of service to our nation, Matt was twice selected as a representative from the Coast Guard for Exchange Duty with the U.S. Navy and as a “Loaned Executive” to the United Way in New Orleans. As one of six officers selected nationally, Matt’s naval service included duty as division officer aboard a combatant vessel in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and later in San Francisco as the first Coast Guard lawyer assigned to a Naval Legal Service Office, where he litigated over 100 trials and served as senior JAG lawyer supervising a group of trial lawyers. During his Coast Guard service, Matt was sent to the University of Washington School of Law to earn his Juris Doctor (law) degree on full scholarship. Matt also holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the Seattle University Institute of Public Service.

Upon his Coast Guard retirement, Matt decided to spend more time with his wife and four children and so embarked on a new career as the founder of a Navy leadership program in South Lake Tahoe. During his dozen years as program director and senior instructor, Matt repeatedly earned the distinction of entry into Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and had the honor of leading his students to numerous national and regional awards, including that of “Distinguished Unit,” the program’s highest award. During this period, Matt was twice selected as an Olympic Torchbearer (1996, 2002) in recognition of his service to the community as a leader in various programs, including Boy and Sea Scouting, youth baseball and soccer, school tutoring, and ROTC, where he personally influenced hundreds of his students to donate thousands of hours of service to various programs and events, including Special Olympics, Christmas Cheer, and Lake Tahoe Marathon. These efforts resulted in the City of South Lake Tahoe awarding the program two proclamations of recognition.

Matt is the very proud father of four adult children: Matthew, who is a 2003 Air Force Academy graduate and Air Force officer currently serving in the Middle East; adopted son, Michael, who is a Navy veteran, UC Davis graduate, and behavioral therapist in Sacramento; Justin, an Army veteran and full-time college student in Oklahoma; and Brianna, a stay-at-home daughter with Down Syndrome. Just like Matt himself, all of his sons are Eagle Scouts.

After 13 years of teaching, Matt returned to the legal profession by becoming a California lawyer and opening his own firm, which provides legal services in trial litigation; business creation; landlord-tenant law; estate planning; and family law. He is a member of the Sierra Community Church in South Lake Tahoe, and has served as a board member of Tahoe Youth and Family Services and member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He spends his free time reading, running, cycling, kayaking, shooting pictures, listening to jazz, and watching college football and major league baseball (Matt had the pleasure of coaching then 12-year-old Mike Fontenot in Slidell, Louisiana, now of the World Champion San Francisco Giants!).
