InfoMark Durkan was educated at St Patrick's Primary School and St Columb's College, Derry. He studied politics at Queen's University, Belfast, and later studied Public Policy Management at Magee. He is married to Jackie, lives in Derry and supports Manchester United.

He was President at Queen's from 1981-1982 and Deputy President of USI from 1982-1984.

In 1984 he went to work for John Hume as his Assistant and adviser. He continued this role until 1998. In 1986 he managed Seamus Mallon's successful by-election campaign and Eddie McGrady's election as MP for South Down in 1987.

He was SDLP Chairperson from 1990 to 1995, during which time he was a strong defender of the Hume/Adams dialogue in the face of a high degree of media criticism. He also served as a negotiator in the inter-party talks which led to the Agreement, and was heavily involved in drafting many sections of the final document.
