Info | LEE, Thomas, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Philadelphia, Pa., November 28, 1780; resided in Chester Valley, Pa., during his earlier years and attended the common schools; moved to Leesburg, Cumberland County, N.J., about 1798 and to Port Elizabeth in 1805; became a merchant, shipbuilder, and landowner; judge of the court of common pleas 1813-1815; member of the State general assembly in 1814 and 1815; postmaster of Port Elizabeth 1818-1833 and 1846-1849; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1837); chairman, Committee on Accounts (Twenty-fourth Congress); founder of Port Elizabeth Library and Academy; died in Port Elizabeth, N.J., on November 2, 1856; interment in the Methodist Episcopal Churchyard.
