Dr. Julie Thomas was born in Pierre, South Dakota on May 7, 1945 to Herbert Ransom Thomas, a cattleman, and Harriet Frances Woodard Thomas, a rural school teacher. She comes from a long line of pioneers who share a love for the land and the spirit to meet new challenges.

Julie learned the value of Social Security benefits at age 12 when her father died. Her mother received benefits to supplement her teaching income. While growing up, Julie worked continuously and was the first girl to deliver newspapers in her hometown. Julie worked on George McGovern's first successful campaign in 1962, handing out brochures and knocking on doors.

Julie attended George Washington University in Washington, DC and planned a career in the Foreign Service. While at GWU, Julie worked for the US Geological Survey, Div. of Oceanography and Marine Geology. Preferring science courses, she changed her major to pre-med and attended the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. She then chose a pediatric residency at the University of Iowa and has been working for Iowa families since 1971.

In 1974, following her residency, Dr. Thomas was the first female pediatrician in Cedar Rapids. She has built two successful practices and now treats 2000 children in 1000 Iowa families.

Dr. Thomas developed a student research endowment in honor of a pre-med advisor who encouraged her to study medicine. Dr. Thomas and her husband have provided college financial assistance to individual students in need. She has also served on the GWU National Council for Arts and Sciences.

As a breast cancer survivor, Julie understands the importance and impact of public decisions and has been involved in local and national policy during her entire professional career.

She worked on state legislation that eliminated drive-by deliveries in Iowa. She presented the legislation to State Representatives Mona Martin (R-Davenport) and Minette Doderer (D-Iowa City), rallied grassroots support for the bill and testified before the Iowa legislature. She then worked on final wording with then-Speaker Ron Corbett (R-Cedar Rapids). She has also worked with state legislators on the State Child Health Insurance bill (now HAWK-I).

Dr. Thomas is past president of the Iowa Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and was appointed to the AAP Committee on Federal Government Affairs. Her work on the AAP Task Force on Child Health Insurance and Access to Care led to the Medikids bill that was introduced last May by Congressman Pete Stark and Senator John Rockefeller.

Julie is the founder and medical director for an annual Diabetes Camp in Cedar Rapids and is a founding member of a self-esteem seminar called "Growing Up Workshop." She is a member of the YWCA board of trustees and is a volunteer with the American Cancer Society breast cancer survivor "Reach to Recovery" program. In 1997 she was awarded "Woman of the Year" during the Linn County Woman's Day. She was named one of the "Best Doctors in America" who practices general pediatrics in 1997 and 2000.

Julie lives in Cedar Rapids with her husband, Judge William Thomas.
