Info | MAHAN, Bryan Francis, a Representative from Connecticut; born in New London, New London County, Conn., May 1, 1856; attended the public schools and was graduated from the Robert Bartlett High School; learned the trade of plumber; studied law at the Albany (N.Y.) Law School, from which he graduated in 1880; was admitted to the bar in 1881 and commenced practice in New London; member of the State house of representatives in 1882 and 1883; member of the board of school visitors 1885-1887, and served as secretary; appointed prosecuting attorney in 1891, but resigned in 1892; one of the organizers of the City of Richmond Steamboat Co. in 1893 and served as president; postmaster of New London from October 30, 1894, to December 20, 1898; served as mayor 1904-1906 and 1910-1913; member of the State senate in 1910 and 1911; delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1916; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-third Congress (March 4, 1913-March 3, 1915); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1914 to the Sixty-fourth Congress; again appointed postmaster of New London, Conn., March 23, 1915, and served until his death there on November 16, 1923; interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
