| Info | Julia Gillard, was born in Wales in 1961 and migrated to Australia 1966 with her family.
Julia grew up in South Australia where her father worked as a nurse and her mother
worked in the kitchen of an aged care institution.
Julia moved to Melbourne at the age of 20 in order to serve as a full-time elected official
with the national student organisation and decided to make Melbourne her home. Julia
completed her education at Melbourne University and graduated in 1986 with Law and Arts degrees.
Julia now lives in Altona.
Work History
-Various waitressing and secretarial jobs when a student at high school and University.
-Commenced at Slater & Gordon in 1987 and worked as a lawyer for working people
and their trade unions in the area of industrial law.
-Admitted as a partner of Slater & Gordon in 1990.
-Appointed as John Brumby's Chief of Staff in May 1996.
Political Achievements
-Elected as the Education Vice President of the Students' Association of Adelaide
University in 1980.
-Elected in 1981 as the first student President of the Adelaide University Union which
managed the campus catering and recreational facilities.
-Appointed to the Adelaide University Council in 1981 and invited to give the
graduation address.
-Elected as the National Education Vice President of AUS in 1982.
-Elected as the National President of AUS in 1983 (the second woman to
ever hold the position).
-Member of National Let's Develop Education Commitee in 1982-83.
-Elected to the Administrative Commitee of the Victorian Branch of the
ALP in 1983.
-Co-convener of the Affirmative Action Working Party 1994.
-Elected as the Member for Lalor 1998.
