Info | ERNEST W. SHAND of Weathersfield, Windsor County, Democrat, was born to Scottish immigrants in New Haven, Connecticut, on February 3, 1940, and became a resident of present town in 1973. He grew up on the shore, graduated from West Haven High School and attended Southern Connecticut State College and New Haven College. His interest in the water led him to join the United States Coast Guard for a four year tour of duty. His career with the telephone industry started with the Southern New England Telephone Company, retiring in June 2002 as an engineer with Bell Atlantic. He has been married to Loraine "Cookie" Shand, a teacher, for 35 years. They have four grown children, and five grandchildren. Their children are spread out: two daughters live in Vermont, one lives in Maine and their son is stationed in Korea with the U.S. Army, soon to return to Fort Hood, Texas. He moved to Vermont in 1973 just before their oldest child started school. They felt that Vermont offered values and a setting that would be very beneficial to their children. They soon became involved with a variety of efforts and organizations. Ernest has served as a selectman in Weathersfield; deputy chief and training officer of the Ascutney Volunteer Fire Department; an ambulance service volunteer; and Civil Defense coordinator. He is also an active member of the Ascutney Union Church (clerk, past moderator, chair of various boards, and choir member). He was recently elected as a trustee of the Proctor Library in Weathersfield. Member of the House: 2003-2004. Home phone: 674-5021. POST OFFICE ADDRESS: 46 Old Bridge Road, Windsor 05089.
