Thomas Higgins first visited Alaska for the summer of 1992 working in the gateway community at Denali National Park; returning to work a second summer in 1994 with full intentions to make Alaska his permanent home.
In mid-summer the candidate found fulltime year-around employment at the brand new Alyeska Prince Hotel in Girdwood.
In spring of 1997 the candidate moved to Anchorage to attend UAA, where he did so until graduating in 2002 with a BA from the Theater and Dance Department.
During these years at UAA Higgins became more and more concerned with the direction of the country, the state & the city prompting him to become politically active. In 2000 Higgins became active in the Green Party of Alaska and the Ralph Nader for President campaign.
In December of 2000 Higgins was greatly distressed about the US Supreme Court’s decision that stopped the vote counting in Florida. Higgins wore this distress figuratively on this sleeve and literally on this car in the form of two 4 by 8 feet signs calling into question the constitutionality of the gw bush regime.
In the spring of 2001 Higgins made his first bid at elected office running for the Anchorage Assembly. In the fall of 2003 Higgins first heard about the presidential hopeful from Ohio Congressman, Dennis Kucinich. The more Higgins learned of Kucinich the more he believed that America needed a president like him. So in the spring of 2004 Higgins joined the Democratic Party to aid Kucinich’s presidential bid. Higgins’ leadership, honesty, vision, and gumption earned him one of five at large Kucinich delegate spots for the Democratic National Convention in Boston.
On the convention floor Higgins stood proudly with 42 other Kucinich delegates to vote NO to the “war is the answer” mentality of the Kerry/Edward ticket and YES to peace is the only option.
Higgins presently works a summer position with Northern Air Maintenance Services (NAMS), a division of Northern Air Cargo, as well as continuing his year around theater work with Out North Theater, Alaska Theater of Youth,
and most all performing arts organizations at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, through his union
