Ex-State Higher Education Commissioner & '82 Auditor Candidate

Ever since Kay Ivey was elected as the first woman student body vice president and president of the SGA Senate at Auburn University, she has had a successful career that includes being a high school teacher, a banker, a public official, a candidate for state wide office, a timber farmer, and a community volunteer. Since 1989 she has been a member of the RNC (Republican National Committee).

Banking Experience:

Ten years with Merchants National Bank of Mobile (now Regions)
President, Alabama Young Bankers, first woman ever elected
Established the Economic Education Program for students and teachers presented by local bankers to demonstrate how academic courses are essential to succeed in the business world. This became a nationwide program sponsored by the American Bankers Association, Washington, D.C., with which Kay served as consultant in 1979.
Chairman, Education Committee, Alabama Bankers Association, which coordinated the establishment of the Alabama Banking School.

At Auburn University, Kay won five campus wide campaigns in four years (freshman senator, sophomore senator, secretary of student body, vice president of student body, and member, Miss Homecoming Court). She was named �Outstanding Senior� by five campus wide organizations. Tapped for Mortar Board. In 1996, she was named �Outstanding Alumni�, College of Education. She was appointed by President Muse to serve on the Presidents�s Task Force, Awareness of Auburn�s Achievements. Kay is a lifetime member Auburn Alumni Association and a member of the National Advisory Council, College of Education, Auburn University.

Legislative Experience:

Alabama House of Representatives, Reading Clerk, appointed in 1982 by Speaker of the House, Joe C. McCourquodale, becoming the first and only woman ever to serve.

With the Alabama Commission on Higher Education for 13 years, advocated policies affecting higher education to elected officials and legislators.

Organizing member of the Alabama Compact for Citizenship and Leadership, Established by the Legislature in 1994 with Act No. 94-482.

In 1994, Kay helped organize the Legislative Women Caucus task force that established the Alabama Women�s Leadership Database, which is a program to identify and train qualified women to be considered for appointments by the Governor, the Legislature and the Congressional Delegation.

Executive Government Experience:

In 1979, Kay was the first woman to be appointed by Governor Fob James to his cabinet where she coordinated the departments that render corporate and human services, and then she was named Assistant Director, Alabama Development Office, 1981-82, responsible for developing the Prepared City/County Program. This is designed to help communities prepare to be successful to attract and locate new business and industry.

In 1982, Kay ran for State Auditor and finished second in a runoff election.

From 1985, to 1998, with the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, as director of Government Relations and Communication, Kay recommended strategies to elected officials, the media, and the business and education communities that will improve students� academic achievements at high standards.
Kay served as National Chairman of Government and Communications Officers of SHEEO (the States� Higher Education Executive Officers) and was elected in August 1995 to serve again in that capacity.

Three Governors of Alabama have appointed Kay Ivey to Positions:

Governor Fob James, in 1979 appointed Kay Assistant Director, Alabama Development Office.

Governor Guy Hunt in 1989 selected Kay as one of ten women statewide to be named Outstanding Women for Leadership during the Alabama Reunion.

Governor Jim Folsom in 1994, appointed Kay to a three - year term as a member of the Alabama Women�s Commission. She served as Treasurer.

Family:

Kay is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. B.N. Ivey of Camden, Alabama. B.N. Ivey finished his career as Assistant State Director, Farmers Home Administration, USDA. Barbara Nettles Ivey served as Vice President & Cashier, Camden National Bank.

Kay is a member of First Baptist Church of Montgomery. She spends much time with young people counseling with them about their career options and success with interviews.
