On July 17, 2004, Doreen Ellen Newfell married Richard Charles Parent. Together they enjoy two children, Rick’s son Patrick who’s 25, and their daughter Joules 14 mos, whom they just recently adopted from the Jiangxi province in China. As a family they enjoy a wide array of interests. With the new addition to the family, the fun will be Joules teaching them how to be parents again. It will be an exciting journey that will be enjoyed by everyone.
Rick, being born in the famous Fishing Village of New Bedford, MA, has always had an interest in the ocean. From watching the fishing boats come & go from the beach as a youth, the Sea has always intrigued him. During his freshman year of high school, he would see the campus of Massachusetts Maritime Academy through the early morning mist as the bus he was riding on would crest the Bourne Bridge. From that point going forward, he knew that was the college that he wanted to attend. He never did make it to Massachusetts Maritime Academy, but that didn't stop him. During the ensuing “Summer Break” his life changed forever.
At the young age of 15, he took his biggest step forward, and signed on as “Greenhorn Shacker” aboard the F/V Atlantic Mist, a commercial Scallop boat. Much to the dismay and reserve of his parents, they signed the Medical release that the captain had requested and off he was to ply the ocean as a Heralded New Bedford fisherman. For the next 12+ years, Rick continued his seagoing career in the Fishing Fleet, working all jobs from Deckhand & Engineer to Captain. The thought always was in the back of his mind of what if he had chosen a different path & did indeed go to the Academy. At the suggestion of the Owner of the fishing boat that he was currently employed on who had graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy, he took the advice given to him & made the jump in 1992, to the "big ships"!
Starting all over again, he joined the National Maritime Union as an Unlicensed Electrician (Crew) and never looked back. Rick took the knowledge & work ethic that he had gained as fisherman and applied both disciplines’ to his job and quickly moved forward and upwards. In 1996, he tested for his Third Engineers License. Having acquired the license, he was now considered an “Officer”. With the help of a friend, he joined the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association, better known as the MEBA, District No.1-PCD, the proudest & strongest Maritime Engineering Officers Union in the United States. Over the past 15+ years, Rick has taken the jobs that others have passed up. By stepping up to those challenges, he has been able to advance his license status to the coveted Chief Engineer of Unlimited Horsepower. It took Rick 5 years to get his original License, another 6 years to raise his grade to Chief Engineer and just 1 year later stepped in as a Chief Engineer when others had turned down the job. By doing the “DIRTY” work so to say, it has opened the doors for Rick where they may not have been in other circumstances. His reputation as being the guy that doesn't put his own personal gains in front of the cause has helped him get to where he is today.
