A Strong Foundation

Born and raised in New Orleans, Gary Johnson was taught faith, family and community by his parents. Greg, a truck driver and small businessman, and Sheila, a public school teacher, went great lengths to emphasize the importance of hard work and community service to their children. There are few values more important.

When Gary wasn’t volunteering to help his father repair and paint houses for other families or building character on the football and baseball fields at Harrell Park, Carrollton Park and Norman Park, he was studying hard and conquering a speech impediment to become one of the top students in his class.
Greg and Sheila worked hard day in and day out to provide for their family while staying active in the community and their children’s education. Gary took these lessons to heart and built a strong foundation of values that would lead to a passion for community service.

Commitment to Education and Community
Gary excelled as a student athlete at St. Augustine High School, lettering in baseball and football, leading the football team into the playoffs. Gary took an active role in improving the school experience for his fellow students and was able to secure national TV and radio show host Tavis Smiley for his class’s commencement address.

Gary went on to Morehouse College, working as a real estate agent to help pay tuition. He was among the top of his class and gained admittance into an exclusive business program that gave him the opportunity to learn from Fortune 500 executives from all different backgrounds about the challenges facing their companies in the global business environment. While at Morehouse, Gary served on the Ethics Board of the Student Government Association and volunteered to mentor underachieving students. He graduated cum laude with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Economics.

Toward the end of his college years, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast Region. Gary immediately stepped into action, organizing massive relief efforts that provided food, shelter, clothing and group therapy sessions to thousands of affected residents. His efforts also spurred several colleges in the Atlanta area to take in displaced students from Louisiana and other areas so they could continue their education.

His own family displaced, Gary organized candlelight vigils and town hall meetings that drew media attention to the inadequacies of the federal government’s response. Being so personally affected by the poor government response only strengthened Gary’s desire to do better for his community.

Putting Values to Work
Following college, Gary started a small business but couldn’t ignore his New Orleans roots and his passion for improving our community. In order to better serve us, Gary headed to Washington, DC after being offered a staff position on the most powerful committee in Congress, the House Rules Committee.

During his years on Capitol Hill, Gary has worked with the Democratic leadership on key legislation and appropriations bills to help improve not only communities in both Jefferson and Orleans Parish, but also the nation. Gary and his staff were critical to the development and passage of President Obama’s economic stimulus package, bills extending unemployment benefits and the recent health care reform package.

Gary’s experience on Capitol Hill has taught him how much Jefferson and Orleans Parish would benefit from strong representation in Congress. The people of Louisiana’s 2nd District deserve a member of Congress who will put them first, someone who knows how to navigate Capitol Hill and bring back the resources we need to improve our communities.

Now, Gary Johnson is exploring a run for Congress so he can bring back those resources from Washington that we have been promised and we deserve. He’s not a career politician, he’s a dedicated public servant. Gary has the experience and passion to get the job done.
