Former State Senator Luis A. Gonzales, is a 58 year old native American/Hispanic of Yaqui Indian Descent, and a life long resident of Tucson, Arizona. He and his wife Bertha have four children: Monica, Maritza, Luis and Hugo; together, they form a family committed to public service.

Luis Gonzales grew up in Tucson, where he attended Richey Elementary and Tucson High School. He attended the University of Arizona as a Political Science major. He holds a Ped-Orthic Management Training Certificate from Ball State University, and also studied Business Management at the University of Phoenix.

Luis Gonzales and his wife Bertha have four children: Monica, Maritza, Luis Jr. and Hugo; a daughter-in-law, Nora, and grandchildren Mark, Jason, Danella and Alexa.

Served with Honor

Luis Gonzales served our country from 1966 to 1970 in the U.S. Air Force during the Indo-Chinese conflict. In Europe he served with the Tactical Air Command, U.S. Air Forces where he was attached to TUSLOG (Turkey - U.S. Logistics).







Cesar Chavez and Luis Gonzales were at the forefront of the struggle for civil rights for all workers.

A Lifetime of Community Service

Luis Gonzales� present and past affiliations include the American Red Cross, YMCA, Latin American Club, El Rio Men Golf Club, The American Legion, Los Decendientes de Tucson, Arizona Bilingual Education Association, El Pueblo Neighborhood Health Clinic, El Rio Neighborhood Health Center, NALEO (National Association of Elected and Appointed Officials), Arizona City and County Managers Association, Maricopa County Association of Governments, Arizona Indian Gaming Regulators Association, National Indian Gaming Regulators Alliance, California Regulators Association and the National Association of Securities Dealers.

In recognition of Luis Gonzales� leadership skills, his dedication to the community, his tireless work in social justice and empowerment and his endless commitment to public service, he has been conferred numerous recognitions and awards, including his naming as an affiliate member of the Marianist Order, Brothers of Saint Mary�s.

A History of Success

From 1989 to 1996, Gonzales was employed by the Pascua Yaqui Indian Tribe of Arizona where he served as Director of Planning and Economic Development, Executive Assistant to the Chairman, Director of Government Operations and Executive Director of the Tribal Gaming Regulatory Agency.

From 1996 to 1998, Gonzales was Director of Enforcement, Deputy Director and Executive Director of the Tribal Gaming Regulatory Agency for the Ak-Chin Maricopa Indian Community.

From 1998 to 2000, Gonzales served as Town Manager for the Town of Guadalupe, Arizona. The Town of Guadalupe is an incorporated town with 6,000 residents. (48% Yaqui Indian and 50% Hispanic).

Luis was responsible for the management of all Guadalupe government departments, including police and firefighters. He coordinated the development of a $6 million municipal multi-purpose center that included the South Mountain Community College campus, a county branch library, and a Boys and Girls Club youth recreation center.

Since October 2000, Gonzales has held the position of Deputy Gaming Commissioner (Deputy Director) for the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians in Alpine California. He is responsible for the regulation and oversight of the Viejas Casino Operation.

Luis Gonzales also operates a home-based consulting firm specializing in international business.
