Info | Crafton optometrist and Socialist Party activist.
In his career working as an optometrist for 55 years, Van Essen served as president of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association, secretary of the Pittsburgh Optometric Association, and was a member of the national and state associations. In the year he died, Van Essen was appointed to the State Board of Optometric Examiners.
Pennsylvania representative on Socialist Party National Committee 1926-1930. Van Essen served as a Socialist Party candidate for various offices mostly in the 1930s, campaigning for higher wages and improved working conditions for industrial jobs.
