InfoJoy MacPhail was elected Leader of the BC New Democrats in June 2001. Joy is the Leader of the Opposition in the BC Legislature under the government of Premier Gordon Campbell and the BC Liberal Party.

A New Democrat for over two decades, Joy has a solid record of commitment to fairness for working people and social and economic equality for all.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Joy was the third of four children. Her mother was a nurse, and her father a construction worker. She studied economics at the University of Western Ontario before travelling to England to earn a diploma from the London School of Economics.

Joy's lengthy record of community achievements includes the development of Hastings Park, the establishment of the Cottage Hospice, the founding of the Kidsafe Project and the creation of the Community Services Fund in Vancouver's inner city. Working with the Stop Lafarge Coalition, she helped the community fight against a proposed concrete batch plant next to New Brighton Park and the resulting environmental and social damage to the park, Burrard Inlet, and the surrounding community. She continues to support the Coalition in its fight against Lafarge's proposal to build on the former Sterling Shipyard site.

First elected to the Legislature in 1991, Joy has extensive government experience, serving in several positions as a senior minister, including Minister of Education, Finance, Health, Labour, and Social Services, as well as Deputy-Premier.

During her ten years in government from 1991 to 2001, Joy was chair, at various times, of Government Caucus, the Treasury Board, the Economic Council, the Cabinet Committee on Collective Bargaining and the Cabinet / Caucus Committee on Legislation. She also served as co-chair of the Legislature's Constitution Committee, was vice-chair of the Public Accounts Committee, and was Government House Leader.

Joy's strong support for expanded childcare and affordable housing made a positive difference in the lives of many individuals and families in the province. As a strong environmentalist, Joy successfully advocated for a moratorium on the grizzly bear hunt. She is also proud of the world renowned achievement of the NDP government in protecting BC's vital environment.

Joy lives with her son Jack.
