Elected to the Oregon House of Representatives from the 60th District in 1972, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, and 1996.
In his long and colorful life, Jones was a jockey, a cowboy and then a cattle rancher in Oregon’s sagebrush country. From 1973 until the start of 1999, the Republican lawmaker represented a sprawling House district in far southeastern Oregon.
His daughter, Karen Dinsmore, who lived with Jones, said that she only took his vehicle keys away five weeks ago and that Jones was active until shortly before his death. He went to bed Tuesday night and didn’t get up Wednesday, she said. She didn’t have a cause of death beyond natural causes.
“He just wore out,” she said.
For many years, it seemed he never would wear out. In his mid-80s, he fell off his horse and broke two ribs. He climbed back on and kept riding. He fought cancer at the end of his legislative tenure but might well have run again if he wasn’t being forced out by the term limits then in place.
He beat the cancer, had knee surgery at the age of 99 and liked to go on long car trips until a few years ago. In 2003, he and his longtime lady friend, Fannie Myers, drove up to Valdez, Alaska to see the big oil pipeline.
One obituary says he was born on September 10, 1910. Another says he was born on September 21, 1910.
