| Info | Virginia Johnson was raised in Reidsville, North Carolina, where she was instilled with conservative small town common sense and values by her father, a businessman, and her mother, a public school teacher. Even as a child and teenager, Virginia energetically pursued a variety of interests ranging from Girl Scouts, swimming, student government, high school theatre and church junior choir to the marching band.
After Virginia graduated from Reidsville Senior High School in 1977, she attended Duke University where she majored in Russian and French. While an undergraduate, Virginia attended the Pushkin Language Institute in Moscow for one semester, observing first hand the oppression and despair associated with daily life under the Communist regime.
Virginia graduated with honors from Duke University in 1981. She then attended Wake Forest University School of Law, receiving her law degree in 1985. During law school, she defrayed the costs of her education by working as a waitress and commuting to Greensboro where she interned in the Office of the City Attorney.
Immediately after she graduated from law school, Virginia began her career in public service as Law Clerk for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of North Carolina in Greensboro.
Virginia’s Capitol Hill experience began as an attorney for the United States House of Representatives in 1996 when she was named as counsel to the House Ethics Committee. During her time with the Ethics Committee she dealt with issues surrounding the proper use of power and authority in Washington D.C.
Shortly after the attacks on September 11, Virginia was appointed to a senior staff position on the House Armed Services Committee where she worked during some of our country’s most dramatic times, loyally serving our men and women in uniform. While with the Armed Services Committee she worked on issues ranging from providing proper training conditions for our soldiers to improving the working conditions for the civilian personnel working at the Pentagon and military installations throughout the nation and the world.
Prior to her arrival on Capitol Hill, Virginia practiced law in Washington, focusing on estate planning, elder law and tax law. She has also served as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and the University of San Diego.
Virginia’s experience on Capitol Hill will allow her to hit the ground running when elected to represent North Carolina in Congress. Virginia will work with President Bush to ensure the safety and security of our nation. She believes the working families of North Carolina should have high paying, secure jobs and will fight to revitalize our economy and protect our workers. She will make improving our schools a top priority and will fight for medical malpractice reform to reduce medical costs to patients. Virginia is firmly committed to protecting family values as a Member of Congress and will fight any attempt to take away our rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment.
