Info | Denver City Council President & '94 US Senate Candidate
Born in Del Norte, Colorado. Ramona has lived in Denver most of her life, raising three children with her husband, Lawrence. She is a successful businesswoman who is extensively involved in the community.
Now in her fourth term on the Denver City Council, Councilwoman Ramona Martinez has gained a reputation as a passionate advocate for youth, families, working people, and small business.
Ramona's political career began when she started working on problems in her own West Denver community in the early 1970's.
After working on several local and state political campaigns, Ramona was hired by Denver City Councilman Sam Sandos to establish a district office providing constituent service and support. When Councilman Sandos decided not to run for re-election in 1987, Ramona ran for his seat, easily defeating two opponents with over 60% of the vote. She was re-elected in 1991, 1995, and again recently in May 1999.
In 1991, her peers elected her as President of Denver City Council, making her the first Hispanic woman to hold that position. The following year, she was re-elected as President, only the second person to serve two consecutive terms.
On Council, Ramona has chaired the Health, Housing, and Human Services Committee, the Public Safety Committee, and the Metro State and Federal Government Committee. Committed to improving educational opportunities for all children, she was one of the first Council members to serve on the Denver City-Schools Coordinating Committee. In 1994, she was appointed City Council's representative to the Denver Regional Council of Governments. She also served on the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District. On a district level, Ramona is known promoting community development and bringing social service agencies and schools together to improve services to children and families.
