Colorado Lieutenant Governor Rogers represents a new generation of American leadership. He is the nation's youngest Lieutenant Governor, America's highest-ranking African-American state-elected official, Chairman of the Republican Lieutenant Governors Association, and serves on the Executive Committee of the National Conference of Lieutenant Governors.
Lieutenant Governor Rogers is a leader in improving the quality of life for Coloradoans. Following the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Lieutenant Governor Rogers visited Ground Zero and attended the memorial service in Yankee Stadium on behalf of all Coloradoans. Additionally, in October 2001, he was the first in the state to call for a Colorado Office of Homeland Security.
The Lieutenant Governor is firmly committed to improving the lives of Colorado's children and the quality of schools. He has taken his message of school reform, accountability and educational choice throughout the country. He sponsored "Uncensored: The Lieutenant Governor's Conference On Youth Education" - a first of its kind summit of students on how to improve education. He is also proud to serve on the Colorado Commission on Tax Reform, which is working towards lower and fairer taxes.
The Lieutenant Governor has been widely recognized for his work and commitment to strengthening America and last year was a recipient of the prestigious Trumpet Award from Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting System. The Trumpet Award is one of the nation's highest honors bestowed in recognition 0f African-American achievement and heralds the accomplishments of African-Americans who have made significant contributions and enhanced the quality of life for all Americans. Persons who have received the award range from Muhammad Ali, former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks and Lena Horne, to Tiger Woods, General Colin Powell, Nat King Cole and Whitney Houston.
In the dramatic election cycle of 2000, Lieutenant Governor Rogers was a speaker at the Republican National Convention, helped in the party's fundraising effort and criss-crossed the country on behalf of President Bush and other congressional and state candidates. In addition to making numerous appearances on national television and radio programs in support of the President, he has been profiled by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Washington Times newspapers as well as Business Week, Ebony, Jet and Teacher magazines. He has made extensive efforts to expand the diversity of the Republican Party and to expand its base. Ebony labeled him a "political trailblazer." And The New York Times said he is a "young, articulate, energetic � and well-prepared newcomer."
Lieutenant Governor Rogers has deep roots in Colorado, growing up in Commerce City and graduating from Adams City High School. He worked his way through Colorado State University majoring in Business Administration, and received his law degree from Arizona State University. While there, he won the school's first-ever National Championship by winning the American Bar Association Negotiation Competition, a contest involving some 80 U.S. law schools. Joe Rogers practiced law with one of Colorado's oldest and largest firms, and served as Counsel to Colorado's former U.S. Senator Hank Brown.
On January 12, 1999, Joe Rogers was sworn in as Colorado's 41st Lieutenant Governor. He won an impressive 92 percent of the state's counties and 60 percent of the overall vote in the Republican primary election. He is the only African-American state executive in the United States.
Joe is married to Juanita Kay and they have three children, Trent - 7; Jordan - 5; and Haley - 4.
