Info | A lifelong public servant, John Gunyou has earned the trust of the state’s most respected leaders. John is widely regarded as one of Minnesota’s top budget experts, and has the experience to manage the state’s finances during challenging times.
Today John serves as city manager of Minnetonka – a large suburban community recognized as one of the best-run cities in the nation.
John also served as the first finance director for the City of Minneapolis under Mayor Don Fraser. During his time with the City, John was honored with the United States Conference of Mayors’ Financial Leadership award, and was named the best City Finance Officer in the country by City and State Magazine.
But John’s breadth of experience handling challenging budgets doesn’t stop at city hall. As Minnesota’s longest-serving Finance Commissioner under Governor Arne Carlson, John successfully worked with Democrats and Republicans to steer the state through one of Minnesota’s worst financial crises.
In the other half of his career, John was meeting private sector payrolls. As a former partner with the largest economic consulting firm in the Rocky Mountains, and an executive with Minnesota Public Radio, John understands the unique challenges facing businesses and nonprofits in Minnesota.
The father of five public schools graduate, and a former middle school math and history teacher, John is committed to strong public schools. In his words, “The only advantage Minnesota has over everybody else is our highly educated workforce.”
Gunyou is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, where he earned a degree in economics. John went on to earn master’s degrees in economics and public administration from UCLA and the University of Colorado. He has taught at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute and has served on numerous national and regional boards, including the Minnesota Health Care Commission and Minnesota Education Telecommunications Council.
John lives in Minnetonka with his wife Kim, a research clinician. Together they have five adult children.
