InfoHE IS AN EAST TEXAN:
Judge Ron Chapman is a native Texan, an experienced public servant and a dedicated member of his community. He was born in Pittsburg, in East Texas and was raised in East Dallas -- in the area that is now District 5 -- where he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School.

Why I am running for Congress
I'm from here -- I was born in East Texas and grew up in East Dallas. I raised my family here. I've been a judge here for over twenty years.

As a judge, I've worked hard to improve our community by listening to all sides; making those tough decisions; and holding people accountable.

In my mind, those are exactly the qualities we need in a congressman. A long standing leader of our community who can take our values to Washington to make things happen on the issues that we care about, without being indebted to the special interests.

- Ron Chapman

Ron grew up in a working class family - his father was a machinist for Otis Engineering, which later became Halliburton - and understood from an early age the value of hard work. He held several part time jobs to help pay his way through college, attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas where in 1962 he was the first member of his family to receive his undergraduate degree. Ron then continued his education at the SMU law school, where he received his LLb in 1965.

Ron has two grown children, Ron Jr. and Charlyn who were raised in the Dallas area; as well as three grandchildren, Caleb, Brianna, and Ella. Ron and his wife Sally live in Henderson County near Cedar Creek Lake, where Ron has an ongoing adversarial relationship with the fish.

HE IS A COMMUNITY LEADER:
Ron likes to say that he has been in this area since before it was the 5th Congressional District. He has watched this area grow and has committed his life to giving back to this community which raised him.

Over the years Ron has been an active participant with many local and regional programs. He has helped fight hunger by serving on the board of directors for the North Texas Food Bank; He has worked to maintain the public health with the AIDS Services of Dallas program which provides housing for people with AIDS. He has worked to keep people out of his court room by serving on the board of directors for the Greater Dallas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and for Dallas Challenge Inc. - programs which work with adult and teenage substance abusers. Judge Chapman has helped bring the arts to the area by working the Shakespeare festival of Dallas; and he has ensured that people can continue to enjoy the outdoors by serving on the board of directors for the Dallas Nature Center.

However, Ron's favorite contribution to the region is the more than twenty years he has spent with the kids in his community as their youth baseball coach. He has enjoyed being able to watch the children he coached grow up to become upstanding members of the community with kids of their own now competing in many of the same leagues in which he coached.

HE IS A LIFE LONG PUBLIC SERVANT:
Straight out of law school Ron learned the real application of the law by putting criminals behind bars as an Assistant County Attorney in Collin County and as an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas County, where he had the privilege to work under the legendary Dallas District Attorney Henry Wade.

Later in his professional career, Ron learned the necessity to apply the law equitably by representing blue collar defendants while working as a defense attorney for a prominent Dallas law firm.

Ron applied the lessons he had learned and in 1978 was elected a Criminal District Judge. Winning reelections in 1982, 1986 and 1990, Ron served as a Criminal District Judge for over 12 years. In that time Ron tried more capital murder cases than any other Criminal District Judge in Texas; He presided over more felony trials than any other Criminal District Judge in Dallas County; He averaged more than 1,100 case dispositions annually; and he ordered millions of dollars from criminals for restitution to innocent crime victims. As a long-standing, respected judge, Ron was named presiding judge of the 34-county 1st Administrative Judicial Region of Texas

In 1991 Ron was appointed to the 5th District Court of Appeals, where he won reelection in 1992 and served until 1999. Recently Ron has served as a visiting judge throughout the state of Texas. In every-one of his judicial elections, Judge Chapman had the honor of being supported by the members of the Dallas County bar associations and by the respected, non-partisan Committee for a Qualified Judiciary.
