InfoRaised in West Michigan

Robert “Bob” Overbeek was born and raised in Grand Rapids, where his family has lived for five generations. Bob is the oldest son of a hard-working truck driver and homemaker. Bob’s family was active at Lee Street Christian Reformed Church, a block from his childhood home. He sang on the radio for Children’s Bible Hour during elementary school. Bob graduated from Calvin Christian High School, where he helped win two baseball state championships.

Provided for his family

Bob attended Western Michigan University, where he played baseball as a walk-on and led Bible study for student-athletes. Bob married Susie, his college sweetheart, before their senior year. He fondly remembers delivering sandwiches to pay for school and provide for his new family.

Taught our children

Both Bob and Susie put their undergraduate education to work. Bob graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education and taught physics at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Reformed Heritage Christian High School for a year. Their first daughter, Abigail (8), was born during this time, and Susie, who was teaching special education, decided to take care of Abigail at home.

Served our country

Bob was teaching when our country was attacked on September 11, 2001. Bob stepped forward to serve our country and became an officer in the Air Force. From the moment he joined Bob wanted to serve on the front lines against terrorism.

Defended our freedoms

Bob first served in Dayton, Ohio where the Air Force sent him to earn a Masters in Nuclear Science. While in Ohio, Joshua (7), Chloe (6), and Josiah (4) were born. After three years Bob was asked to move his family to Albuquerque, New Mexico to work on the weapons program. On Father’s Day 2007 he left his family to defend our country’s freedom in Afghanistan. During his 10-month deployment Bob traveled throughout Afghanistan and helped rescue 19 Korean hostages from the Taliban. Bob was awarded the Bronze Star for his combat service.

Learned to serve

In the military Bob learned what it means to serve our people and lead by example. Bob’s combat experience in Afghanistan changed his life. After fulfilling his military service, Bob desired to become more equipped to serve the people of Michigan. Bob decided to pursue a Masters in Public Administration at Harvard University, where he’s currently finishing up his studies.

Time to serve at home

Bob’s enduring passion is to serve the people of West Michigan. People are leaving Michigan because jobs are scarce and public leaders in Lansing and Washington have deserted them. Bob is coming back home to serve our people and fight for our future.
