Info | Born and raised in Dunmore, Pennsylvania Kevin is the son of Joseph O. Haggerty; former coach, teacher and retired superintendent of the Dunmore school district and Diane Diskin Haggerty, mother of four children and South Scranton (Minooka) native. Kevin graduated from Dunmore High School in 1991 where he lettered and captained three varsity sports. Kevin was an honors graduate and class officer while at Dunmore High School and credits his public education with his success at Villanova University, where he received his BA degree in Political Science in 1995.
Upon completing his studies at Villanova University, Haggerty was accepted into the 161st United States Marines officer candidate class in Quantico, Virginia. During officer training Kevin seriously injured his shoulder and was physically discharged from the marines. Almost a year later, and with a rehabilitated shoulder Haggerty returned to training, but this time as an enlisted Marine. On March 28, 1997 Kevin graduated from basic training on Parris Island at the top of his class, honored with the platoon’s highest ranked fitness citation.
In 1998 Haggerty worked briefly with now U.S. Senator Robert Casey, in the Pennsylvania Auditor General’s office, before answering a call to teach and coach inner city children. Kevin worked with ‘youthful offenders’ placed in the state system on a number of levels. Haggerty recalls, “"I will never forget my first morning teaching in north Philadelphia. I had already taught inner city children for a year in placement, but this was different. I was alone, walking down Indiana Avenue in a place called the Bad Lands, getting ready to teach some of America’s poorest children. My education was just beginning."”
The children of America’s inner cities captured Kevin’s attention, and he continued his work with at risk children, serving as the Director of Social Outreach at DeSales University in the Lehigh Valley. Kevin led outreach movements across the world and at home in the United States, working with poor families and over one hundred and fifty social justice causes. Inner city education remained at the forefront of Kevin’s work, as he spearheaded a summer retreat program that allowed 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys a chance to experience life on a college campus during the summer months. Haggerty believes that when children are put into a safe, nurturing environment, and given positive resources, that their lives can change for the better.
In 2005 Kevin moved back home to be near his family. Kevin has two older brothers Joseph, an attorney, John, a sales representative, and a younger sister Margee, who is a school teacher. Currently Kevin has 7 nieces and nephews.
In the very present Kevin serves as the Deputy Director for Governmental and Community Affairs in the county of Lackawanna; where he works closely with area colleges and serves on two regional economic development boards, trying to achieve a greater retention rate and job growth in northeast, Pennsylvania for young professionals. Kevin is also an adjunct faculty member in Marywood University’s Communication’s Department. Kevin is married to the former Jennifer Ann Griglock, former Radio City performer and now elementary teacher in the Riverside School District. The couple resides in Dunmore, Pennsylvania.
