InfoRichard J. "Dick" Monteith

From his years of experience working in agri-business to his accomplishments in the State Senate, Dick Monteith continually demonstrates his commitment to preserve Central California's way of life.

Born on February 7, 1932 in Los Banos, Dick spent his early years attending Merced and Stanislaus public schools and graduated from Turlock High School. His education continued at Stanford University where he received his bachelor's degree in Sociology. In addition to his studies, Dick played halfback on the varsity football team and participated on both the track and rugby teams.

While still an undergraduate at Stanford, Dick enlisted in the Reserve Officers Candidate program of the United States Naval Reserves. Upon completing his education, Dick started his life-long career in agri-business as a partner in the Monteith Tractor/Truck Company. He subsequently served in the Marketing Department of Gallo Wines, and as Sales Representative for Weyerhaeuser Company. Dick retired as General Manager of Sales and Distribution for Middleton Packaging prior to seeking his first elective office.

Dick's private sector experience combined with his deep community roots have shaped his legislative priorities. Moreover Senator Monteith has made no secret that his primary focus is to protect the values that have made Central California the special place that it is. His no-nonsense approach to public service allows Dick to work successfully in a bi-partisan manner effectively shaping public policy for Central California.

Dick has made public safety, education and agriculture priorities, which has earned him statewide recognition. As a result of his dedication, Senator Monteith received the California School Board Association's Freshman Legislator of the Year Award in 1998, along with the Gold Award from the Merced-Mariposa California Teacher's Association Uni-Serv. As the only Central California representative with a seat on the Senate Education Committee, Dick works to fix the funding inequities between urban and rural schools. Senator Monteith, therefore, initiated the California Rural Education Summit, which continues to bring educational leaders together to address specialized issues facing our rural schools. In addition, he strongly supports all institutions of higher education in his district to include the many community colleges, the California State University and UC Merced.

In addition to leading the fight to remove the Bay Area's exemption from California's controversial Smog Check II, Senator Monteith works to preserve our agricultural heritage by protecting farmers private property and water rights.

Currently, Senator Monteith serves on several committees which allow him the opportunity to represent the interests of his community well. These committees include Education, Agriculture and Water Resources, Transportation, Local Government and he serves as Vice-Chairman of both the Housing and Community Development and the Natural Resources and Wildlife Committees.
