InfoAs the daughter of immigrants whose parents came to the United States with virtually nothing, Katrina understands that anything is possible in America as long as the doors of opportunity are kept open. Her parents were fortunate enough to get an education, buy a home for their young family, and send their two daughters to college. Eventually they were able to give back to this great country through public service, and Katrina hopes to follow their example by representing the people of New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District.

Katrina has been pushing for change both in Washington and in New Hampshire for all of her adult life. Her first job was working as a young lawyer for then-Senator Joe Biden where she learned the importance of working together across the aisle to create meaningful change.

From her strong support of Joe Biden in his 1988 Presidential campaign to her knocking on doors for President Obama and the Democratic ticket in 2008, Katrina and her family have been actively involved in Granite State Democratic politics over the past two decades. Her husband represented the people of New Hampshire for two terms. Katrina ran the Public Policy Graduate Program at New England College. She currently teaches at Tufts University, runs the NH-based Lantos Foundation for Human Rights and Justice, and serves on the Board of New England College in Henniker.

Katrina’s proudest accomplishments are her seven children, and it is through raising her family in New Hampshire that she has experienced the challenges that so many middle class families face. The Swetts are currently paying three college tuition bills, so Katrina understands how families must sacrifice to pay for higher education and is committed to finding ways to make college more affordable. After her husband left his job to start a small business, her family’s COBRA bill was almost as large as their mortgage payment. She will work to enact meaningful health care reform that controls the spiraling costs of coverage. Most importantly, Katrina understands that the strength of America lies in the thriving middle class that she and her family have always been a part of.

No matter how great a country we aspire to be, we can only achieve our goals when all Americans who want to work can find jobs. Katrina is running for Congress to fight for the interests of hard working Americans who are the heart and soul of our country. As she often says, “The only thing too big to fail is the American middle class.”
