InfoTheodore Fulton "Ted" Stevens

Ted Stevens was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on November 18, 1923, in a small house behind his grandparents' home on Carrollton Avenue. His grandfather built this house when Ted's dad George married Gertrude Chancellor.

Ted's sights were set on becoming a military pilot. In November 1942, after first failing the Marine Air Corps' vision test, he corrected his vision through a series of prescribed eye exercises, and by March 1943 was accepted for a Army Air Corps Air Cadet program at Montana State College. His flying career started at the Gallatin Valley Flight School. In July, 1943, after scoring near the top of the aptitude tests for flight training, he was sent to pre-flight training as an Air Cadet, and received his wings at Douglas, Arizona in May 1944.

After his honorable discharge at the end of the war in March 1946, he resumed his undergraduate education at UCLA on the GI Bill. He obtained a degree in Political Science in 1947, and was accepted at Harvard Law School. Ted's summers during college and law school were spent lifeguarding on evenings and weekends, and interning at the U.S. Attorney's office in Los Angeles during the day.

After graduation from law school in 1950, Stevens was recruited by the Washington, D.C., law office of Northcutt Ely. He was assigned to work with Alaska clients, an important factor in his later decision to work in the then-Territory of Alaska.

In March of 1952 he married Ann Cherrington, a Reed College graduate from Denver, Colorado who worked for the U.S. State Department. The following December, he and Ann drove across country, and in early January traveled up the gravel Alaska Highway to Ted's new job with the Fairbanks law firm of Collins and Clasby.

In September 1953 Ted was nominated for the position of U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks by President Eisenhower. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate for that position in March, 1954. As the U. S. Attorney, Ted served as the principal Federal attorney and prosecutor for Interior Alaska.

He had caught the eye of Secretary of the Interior Fred Seaton, who was involved in the push for Statehood. Accepting an appointment as Legislative Counsel for the Department of the Interior in 1956, Ted returned to the nation's capital. A year later he was named Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Legislation. Stevens was deeply involved in the fight for statehood for Alaska and Hawaii. In 1960 he was appointed Solicitor (Chief Counsel) of the Department

Anxious to return to Alaska after Statehood was accomplished, Ted, Ann and their five young children, Susan, Beth, Walter, Ted and Ben returned to Alaska. Ted opened a law office in Anchorage in January 1961.

After losing a bid for the U.S. Senate in 1962, he was elected to the Alaska State House of Representatives in 1964, and re-elected in 1966, serving as Majority Leader.

In 1968, he was again a candidate for the U.S. Senate, but lost in the primary to the late Elmer Rasmuson. However, in December of that year, when Senator E.L. 'Bob' Bartlett died, Governor Walter J. Hickel appointed Ted to Bartlett's seat in the U.S. Senate. He has been reelected regularly since.
