InfoLarry Aceves is running for Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2010. Larry is not a politician, but an educator with more than 30 years experience in California’s public schools. As California’s State Superintendent, Larry will ensure that California’s students and schools are led by a dedicated educator and an experienced superintendent.

As a former teacher, principal, and superintendent, Larry has always been honored to work for students and with educators dedicated to improving academic achievement. He has been dedicated to teaching and learning since 1974 when he began his career in education. He served in school districts in San Jose and San Diego and the Central Coast. Larry served as the President of ACSA, the largest educational leadership association in the nation. In that position, he worked with school superintendents, principals, and other educators around the state to address challenges and seek opportunities to provide students the best classroom experience possible.

As a school district superintendent, Larry worked with the public and private sectors to establish programs and facilities including a free medical and dental clinic for low income children, preschool programs, parent and community centers, parent training centers, English Language Development programs and gang prevention training. He championed and maintained music, art, and physical education classes for all students. Schools in poorer areas should have just as much funding as those from wealthier areas. Preparing students for both college and work must be a priority.

As Superintendent of Public Instruction, Larry will make it his first priority to work with policy makers and the California legislature to help them understand that the critical need for adequate funding for all schools and programs must be solved if our students are going to flourish. California’s schools have struggled for decades with inadequate and inequitable funding. Our schools have the highest academic standards in the nation, but the lowest levels of school funding. While every teacher, every principal and every superintendent should be held accountable for their students’ academic performance, our schools also must be adequately funded so that these same educators can continually improve the quality of instruction and the necessary support services that students receive. Larry believes our schools and students need access to up-to-date books, materials, technology and career technical training that mirror real-world experience.

As Superintendent of Public Instruction, Larry will rely on his experience as a school superintendent and teacher, and will continue his work to lead our public schools so California’s 6.2 million students can become quality 21st century learners. If you believe that now is the time for a Superintendent to be Superintendent, please join Larry’s campaign.
