As a national leader in cost-effective healthcare delivery, Chris founded and chaired the American College of Cardiology national conference on the subject. He has addressed and worked as a healthcare expert with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Agency for Healthcare Review and Quality (AHRQ), and the United States Congress.
A History of Medical Excellence
Dr. Chris Cates is an interventional cardiologist who has filled north Georgian’s medical needs for the past 21 years with weekly clinics in Hiawassee, Blairsville, and Dahlonega. Chris is a distinguished graduate of The Citadel and Medical College of Georgia who went on to complete his residency and cardiology fellowship training at Vanderbilt University.
Chris most recently served as the Director of Vascular Intervention at Emory University Hospital and Emory (Crawford Long) Hospital and was previously the Director of the Emory Angiographic Simulation Training (EAST) Center.
Chris is a world recognized leader in cardiology, the field of medical simulation, and peripheral vascular disease. He has authored Clinical Expert and Clinical Guidelines documents and published numerous research papers in prestigious medical journals such as Lancet, JAMA, Nature, Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Chris has first-hand knowledge of healthcare delivery systems around the world, which he has leveraged by chairing numerous medical symposiums. He has also trained physicians in new techniques worldwide, including China, Australia, Africa, Malaysia, Europe, Dubai, India, Singapore, Mexico, and South America.
Leading the Way in Medical Procedures
In 1995, Chris became the first physician ever to perform a Carotid Stent procedure in Georgia. In 2005, he performed the first Mission Rehearsal procedure using Virtual Reality simulation in man which was reported in the January 17, 2007, issue of JAMA. He serves on numerous medical advisory boards of Fortune 500 and early stage medical device companies and has been involved in the early development and testing of many novel medical devices. Chris also holds a number of medical device patents.
A Lifelong Family Man
Native Georgians and lifelong Baptists, Chris and his wife, Joy, have been married for more than 30 years and currently reside in Blairsville, Georgia. They have 3 grown children and are awaiting the arrival of their first grandchild, due in April.
