InfoSTONE, William Alexis, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born near Wellsboro, Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pa., April 18, 1846; attended the public schools and the State normal school at Mansfield, Tioga County, Pa.; served in the Civil War as second lieutenant of Company A, One Hundred and Eighty-seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry; after the war became a lieutenant colonel in the State National Guard; studied law in Wellsboro, Pa.; was admitted to the bar in 1870 and practiced in Wellsboro and Pittsburgh, Pa.; district attorney of Tioga County from 1874 to 1876, when he resigned and moved to Pittsburgh, Pa.; served as United States attorney for the western district of Pennsylvania 1880-1886; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-second and to the three succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1891, until his resignation on November 9, 1898; Governor of Pennsylvania from 1899 to 1903; resumed the practice of his profession in Pittsburgh, Pa.; prothonotary of the eastern district of Pennsylvania and served from January 1, 1916, until his death in Philadelphia, Pa., on March 1, 1920; interment in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Pa.
