InfoJohn Blake, a native son of Archbald, grew up in a family resembling most families in Northeastern Pennsylvania. While his career, at times, has taken him to locations distant from his birthplace, he never left Archbald and his heart and his spirit never left the Lackawanna Valley. John Blake is Northeast PA born and bred – straight to his core.

John’s father, Jack, was a Naval veteran of WWII and worked at Tobyhanna Army Depot for over 30 years, while his mom, Theresa Maslar Blake, worked at home rearing five children. Jack and Theresa believed that sharing the common values of faith, family, hard work, and education were as essential to the development of their children as were food, clothing and shelter. It was that rock-solid, traditional, Northeastern Pennsylvania beginning that helped frame John Blake's concept of personal responsibility and provided the foundation for his career in public service.

Graduating from Valley View High School where he achieved recognition in both athletics and academics, John continued his education at Villanova University (1983 BA-Sociology) and maintained his gridiron skills by playing for the Division I Villanova Wildcats.

John continued his schooling and earned a Masters Degree (Social Work) from Marywood College and an MBA (Finance) from the University of Scranton. John also completed Executive Education in Public Management at Harvard University’s prestigious John F. Kennedy School of Government. All of John’s academic experiences enriched his knowledge and honed the skills he needed to accomplish his ultimate goal: to serve the community he loves and values - his hometown - and the entire region that sustains it.

Following his formal education, John embarked upon a career that reflected his commitment to personal and professional excellence. He served as Executive Director for the Lackawanna County Redevelopment Authority, where he secured and leveraged over $50 million in federal, state and private investment for housing, public works and infrastructure improvement projects to support regional business and job growth.

In 1998, he was selected from among 9,000 applicants nationwide for a two year Community Builders Fellowship with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), serving in HUD’s Philadelphia office.

Blake’s experience in community and economic development led him into the private sector as well. As vice-president and senior development advisor for PNC Bank’s community development division, John managed and grew a $35 million portfolio of community development loans and investments, ensuring the success of PNC’s commitment to community reinvestment.

Prior to joining the Department of Community and Economic Development in Harrisburg (in 2007), Blake served as director for the Northeast Office of the Governor, a position which made him Governor Rendell’s primary liaison to local government, the academic community and to the business and economic development community in 15 counties of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

John is the father of two children, Vince and Katie, and the husband of Louise Kubilis Blake. John and Louise will celebrate 25 years of marriage this year. The Blakes live in Archbald - not far from where John was raised, educated and nurtured by a loving family and an extended network of great friends.
