InfoJudge Rita Donovan Hathaway was elected to the bench in 1997, after being nominated by both the Democratic and Republican parties in Westmoreland County.

Prior to her legal career, Judge Hathaway was an elementary school teacher at Mother of Sorrows School in Murrysville, Westmoreland County. Her experiences as a teacher and a mother fostered an awareness of issues facing children in our society, and sparked an interest in becoming an advocate for children and other victims of crime. The desire to better serve the needs of abused children prompted her to enroll in law school, and she graduated from Duquesne University Law School in 1988. Judge Hathaway then worked for ten years as a Westmoreland County prosecutor, representing the citizens of Westmoreland County in all types of criminal matters, from drug crimes to murder. In her capacity as an Assistant District Attorney, Judge Hathaway was the Supervisor of the Child Abuse and Sexual Crimes Unit as well as Chief Trial Attorney. She officially assumed her duties as a Judge in January 1998.

Judge Hathaway has served as a Judge in the Criminal Division for the past four years. She previously presided in the Juvenile and Family Court Division for six years. She is President-Elect of the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges, which provides continuing legal education for more than four hundred Pennsylvania trial judges.

Judge Hathaway was born in 1950 in Boston, Massachusetts, one of six children born to Kathleen and John Donovan. Her mother was a nurse, and her father and grandfather were Boston Police officers. She married George Hathaway in 1970, and graduated from Boston State College in 1972.

Judge Hathaway and her husband reside in Murrysville, Pennsylvania. They have two married children, John Hathaway and Jill Hauck, and eight grandchildren. Judge Hathaway and her family are active members of Saint Barbara Church, Penn Township.

Judge Hathaway is dedicated to public service, has served on several local boards and advisory committees, and strongly believes in the need to be involved in the community.
