Info | For his entire life Mike has always dreamed of living in the West. In 1975 his dream was realized when he met and married his bride Kathy of thirty-four years. They started their life together when they moved from Tennessee to Colorado and settled in Bennett. Together they have reared five children and now have nine grandchildren and counting.
His entire working career has been in the field of Engineering. After his Honorable Discharge in 1965 from the Army serving with the 82nd Airborne, he started his first job was with Perry Smith Company in Tennessee. In 1975 he was employed with Stearns Roger in Denver. Stearns Roger was sold to Raytheon and remained with the company for 17 years. In 1989 he and his wife started a small business providing Design Engineering services to local firms.
In 1994, he became politically active within the Republican Party when he gave up his full time job with Raytheon to make a run for the Colorado House of Representatives. He was outspent by the Democrat incumbent 16 to 1 and only lost by less than 1% of the vote. He attributed his success in the campaign to hard work and by walking the district to meet and listening to the people in the district.
In 1995, he went to work with Bechtel in Denver and retired as a Senior Plant Design Supervisor in 2005. His most rewarding assignment was when he had the opportunity to go to Mississippi to help with Katrina Relief. There he witnessed the best and the worst of big government in action. The best was the ability to help large numbers of people in a short period of time and the worst was rules written in Washington that did not work at the local level.
After retirement Mike and his wife started and operate the S Bar 7 Stables, a full care horse boarding facility in Bennett. He also works as an independent contractor offering his services to Motorola and Wyoming Department of Transportation. In 2007, Mike was elected to the Board of Education in Bennett 29J School District. He is the Vice President and the Board’s Legislative Delegate for the Colorado Association of School Boards. He believes that America’s schools are failing to prepare the majority of our kids for the world they will inherit.
Mike and Kathy enjoy the outdoors by taking week long horse trips in the wilderness areas of Colorado back country. He loves working with kids by giving them the opportunity to experience country life and hard work.
