Infoa Representative from Illinois; born in Baltimore, Md., August 26, 1823; moved with his parents to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1824, and thence to Cumberland, Ill., in 1836; attended private schools in Ohio and Illinois, and Marshall Academy, Marshall, Ill.; becoming an instructor in that academy in 1844; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1853 and commenced practice in Vandalia, Ill.; edited his father’s newspaper for several years; judge of Fayette County 1853-1857; took an active part in the founding and building of the Republican Party; moved to Charleston, Coles County, Ill., in 1857; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1870; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1869); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1868; moved to Denver, Colo., in 1870 and continued the practice of law; president of the Denver School Board 1871-1874; member of the Territorial council in 1874; delegate to the constitutional convention of Colorado in 1875; declined the office as judge of Arapahoe County in 1878 and the appointment as chief justice of Utah Territory in 1879; appointed by the Governor in 1879 to compile the general statutes of Colorado; died in Denver, Colo., January 7, 1903; interment in Riverside Cemetery.
