InfoLet me relate an incident that was a factor in my decision to run for public office. In April 1998, I headed west on vacation. I stopped to eat supper at a little family style B-B-Q restaurant near Memphis, TN. It was a place very much like Three Little Pigs here in Asheville.
As I left the restaurant and pulled back out onto the highway, I was pulled over by the local police. Even though I was doing nothing wrong and all of my information checked out ok, the cops decided they wanted to search my car. It's a long story, but after enduring over an hour of intense questioning, and searching of me and all my possessions to no avail, I left the police there on the side of the highway and continued on toward I-40, intending to continue my trip west.

At the next little town, Millington, five carloads of police forced my car off the road, dragged me with great violence from my car, threw me on the ground, handcuffed me, searched me, threw me into the back of a police cruiser, and proceeded to search my car again. This time, five cops and a drug dog tore my car apart. They did everything but let the air out of the tires. They found nothing, because there was nothing to find! Instead of apologizing or doing anything else even remotely right, they gave me a ticket for "failure to yield to an emergency vehicle!"

In the process of dragging me out of the car while I still had a seatbelt and shoulder strap on, they seriously hurt my left shoulder. I guess they just about dislocated my shoulder joint because I was unable to lift my arm at all. When they clamped the handcuffs on, they clamped the cuffs shut way too tight and cut the circulation off in my left hand, causing my fingers on my left hand to swell up like boiled hotdogs. My hand was numb for weeks. When they got finished searching the car and I was finally allowed to leave, I had to go to the local hospital for x-rays and treatment.

Believe me, you just got the most abbreviated version of that story I can tell. I've talked to dozens of lawyers since then, trying to do something about that unnecessary and illegal assault on me. Everybody agrees that the police were wrong and that my constitutional rights were definitely violated (2 illegal searches, assault, false arrest) but no law firm is willing to take the case unless I put up $45,000 or more as a retainer. This is wrong! It happened to me and I know it has happened to others. One of my goals in politics is to stop atrocities such as this from happening any more to law-abiding Americans.

I'm not a politician and I will never be one. I intend to be a representative of the people, the working class citizens, not corporations. And I intend to represent the mountains, who have no voice.

People tell me, "Michael, you'll never make it in politics because you're too open and honest." My response is, "That's what we need, more openness and honesty in government, and life in general." The old mountain people around here had a saying - "Plain talk is easy understood." So here's some plain talk for you. I'm running for office because I'm angry. I'm fed up. I want changes, because some of the things that are happening these days are just not right, and some things that need to be happening are not. The quality of life we've enjoyed is rapidly being stripped away and nobody is doing anything about it. I want my grandchildren to have the same quality of life that I've enjoyed; clean air & abundant water, trees & wildlife, beautiful views and the freedom to enjoy it all without fear and oppression.

Our personal rights and freedoms are slowly and surely being stripped away. If you have a loaf of bread and somebody snatches the whole loaf out of your hand, you'll object loudly. But if you have a loaf of bread and somebody takes a slice, at first you may not realize that a slice is missing. Sometimes even though enough slices are gone to attract notice, it doesn't seem like a big deal because most of the loaf is still left. But the next time you look it's all gone. That's how our rights are eaten away, one little bite at a time.

Are you tired of the government and big corporations doing anything they want, no matter how negatively it might affect the average citizen? I am. I want my freedoms back. I want returned to me the right to travel safely in my own country without having to be worried about being attacked by armed mobs of police. I understand exactly what it means to be stopped for "driving while black." I understand the sense of violation a raped woman feels. I've been slammed by the system twice now and I didn't like it either time! Look at my history. Anybody can tell that I'm not part of that system, and that's one of my strongest points. I'm the 'other' choice that you've been waiting for.

I've been a Democrat ever since I registered to vote in 1972. I haven't always voted Democratic, though, because no one candidate or party adequately represents all diverse and thoughtful perspectives. For years I have found myself voting for the lesser of two evils. I hope to be your first choice, your most viable alternative. My political philosophy is put together from the best that American political diversity has to offer.

Because I feel so strongly about personal freedoms I'm pro-choice on abortion and dead set against gun control. In environmental matters, I'm like the Green party. I promote the decriminalization of drugs which aligns me with the Natural Law party. In short, I've picked and chosen the best, just like you. I strongly believe that this combination of convictions that I hold makes me a most representative citizen of this county and makes me the best choice in this election. I sincerely hope that you feel that way too.

I ask you to support me in this campaign and vote for me in the election. And take a friend! If you believe in responsible personal freedom, if you love justice, if you want to be able to purchase whatever you wish with the money you earn, then vote for me, and work for me. I must have your help if I'm to be elected. I will serve the interests of the working class and the mountains themselves, not insurance companies and other big business interests. I look forward to talking to you and being of any help I can. Thank you very much for your time, attention, and support. Getting Michael Morgan elected is not an impossible dream. I'm getting great support from the people who hear my message.
