InfoRIDDLE, Haywood Yancey, a Representative from Tennessee; born in Van Buren, Hardeman County, Tenn., June 20, 1834; completed preparatory studies and was graduated from Union University, Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 1854; adjunct professor of mathematics and languages at that institution; was graduated from the law department of Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn., in 1857 and was admitted to the bar in Ripley, Miss., the same year; moved to Smith County, Tenn., in 1858 and engaged in agricultural pursuits; enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in 1861 and served throughout the war, the last year on the staffs of Brigadier Generals Wright and Mackall; moved to Lebanon, Wilson County, Tenn., in 1865 to practice law, but was employed as a deputy clerk in the chancery clerk’s office for five years; appointed clerk for a term of six years in 1870 and served until December 31, 1875; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Samuel M. Fite; reelected to the Forty-fifth Congress and served from December 14, 1875, to March 3, 1879; died in Lebanon, Tenn., March 28, 1879; interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
