InfoTom Umberg has spent most of his adult life protecting consumers, crime victims and workers. As an Assemblyman from Orange County, a federal prosecutor in Santa Ana, and a trusted member of the Clinton White House, Tom Umberg has demonstrated his commitment to his country and community.

While in the Assembly, Tom was a strong advocate for consumer and worker protection. He wrote laws to crack down on criminals that take advantage of disasters and emergencies by swindling the victims, and he was a leader in helping ensure the redevelopment of communities hard hit by disasters. Tom wrote the law to prevent telemarketing fraud and the measure to ensure that the California Department of Insurance investigators had the resources they needed to crack down on fraud. He lead the fight to require insurance companies to provide immunizations for California?s children.

After graduating with honors from UCLA, Tom was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In the Army, he served with the 2nd Infantry Division near the Korean DMZ and with NATO forces in Vicenza, Italy. Today, Tom continues his military service as a paratrooper, Colonel and commander in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Tom, a graduate of the University of California, Hastings College of Law, was appointed by the U.S. Attorney General as an Assistant United States Attorney in Los Angeles. Tom maintained a 100 percent conviction rate prosecuting white-collar criminals, civil rights cases, large-scale drug dealers, and businesses that defrauded senior citizen victims.

Tom was elected to the Assembly after beating the incumbent Curt Pringle to become Orange County?s only elected Democrat. Strongly committed to consumer and victim protection issues, he successfully authored state legislation giving California the toughest hate crime laws in the nation. He wrote the bill to protect seniors in nursing home facilities, and to assist seniors on fixed incomes. Tom championed gun safety measures and laws supporting a woman?s right to choose. As chair of the Environmental Safety Committee, he led the fight against pollution and for conservation. He was honored for his legislative activities by the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association as Consumer Advocate of the Year, the Hispanic Bar Association Legislator of the Year, as well as the California PTA, Planned Parenthood, Victims United and several law enforcement organizations.

Nominated by President Clinton and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Tom served as Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Tom was responsible for the development of United States policy to reduce the flow of illegal drugs into America, as well as counter-drug intelligence and interdiction. Prior to his service at ONDCP, he served as the California Director of Clinton/Gore ?96.

He and his wife, Robin, a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, and their three children, Erin, 20, Brett, 18, and Tommy 15, have made their home in Orange County since 1985.
