| Info | Setti Warren is the Mayor of Newton, Massachusetts. He lives in the house he grew up in with his wife Tassy and daughter Abigail. He is a leader who learned from his family at an early age both the importance of shared responsibility and the value of public service.
Setti’s father, Joe, grew up on one of the toughest blocks in Harlem and devoted his life to helping disadvantaged young people turn their lives around - just as the Police Athletic League and the U.S. Air Force rescued him so many years before. He encouraged each of his children to care for one another and to play an active role in their community.
A Commitment to Serve
Setti Warren has spent more than two decades in public service. He worked alongside his father to help him run a national award-winning program that gave troubled teens work skills and experience.
In 1996, he joined the Clinton White House where he ultimately served as Special Assistant in the Office of Cabinet Affairs. In this capacity, Setti worked repeatedly across organizational lines, bringing diverse groups together to accomplish the President’s agenda. In 1997, Setti was awarded the Human Rights Award in recognition of his outstanding work as Vice-Chair of the City of Newton's Foundation for Ethnic, Racial, and Religious Equality.
In March 2000, Setti was appointed New England Director of FEMA where he managed a large staff and worked closely with local mayors, members of Congress, and governors to administer vital FEMA programs and deliver resources to cities and towns throughout New England. Setti knows what it takes at times of crisis to answer the call and deliver essential services to those who require them.
After serving as National Trip Director for Senator Kerry’s presidential campaign, Setti served as Deputy State Director for the Office of Sen. Kerry in Massachusetts, working as the Senator’s point person on small business and economic development. In this role, he was responsible for bringing federal assistance to cities and towns across the Commonwealth, connecting countless business owners to loans and vital resources, and bringing federal funding to cities and towns across Massachusetts.
Continuing his family’s tradition of military service, Setti enlisted in the Navy Reserve after 9/11, and in 2008 he completed a tour of duty in Iraq as a Naval Intelligence Specialist. His on-the-ground experience in military intelligence gives Setti a unique perspective on some of the national security challenges facing our country today.
Leading Newton
Setti was elected Mayor of Newton in 2009, where he has already made significant change. He delivered two balanced and responsible budgets that take Newton through a multi-year process of getting its fiscal house in order, without hurting vital priorities like education and public safety. He has slowed the growth of government by trimming more than $8 million in waste and duplication, reducing the city’s car fleet, placing numerous services online, implementing millions of dollars in energy savings, and refusing a $25,000 pay raise. He is currently negotiating with city unions to substantially lower health care costs.
Setti implemented performance management, using metrics to hold all city departments accountable for improvement, and introduced the 311 system. Newton residents can visit the city support center website 24 hours a day to submit work orders online and check on the status of their request, or just call 311.
In addition, he brought a new level of openness and responsiveness to all aspects of city government utilizing a monthly call-in program, biweekly office hours, and town hall meetings in every ward for each budget and the capital plan.

As Mayor, Setti has kept the lessons his parents taught him close at hand, and remains committed to bringing people together to solve their differences.
As a U.S. Senator, Setti would bring the same sense of shared responsibility, fiscal discipline, open communication and leadership to Washington that has marked his tenure as Mayor – and his entire career in public service. These are attributes Setti believes are sorely needed in Washington at this time.
