| Info | SPALDING, George, a Representative from Michigan; born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland, on November 12, 1836; immigrated to the United States in 1843 with his parents, who settled in Buffalo, N.Y.; attended the public schools; moved to Monroe, Mich.; taught school in 1860 and 1861; entered the United States Army June 20, 1861, as a private in Company A, Fourth Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry, and was promoted through the ranks to colonel, Twelfth Tennessee Cavalry; appointed postmaster of Monroe, Mich., July 27, 1866, and served until December 15, 1870; special agent of the Treasury Department 1871-1875; mayor of Monroe in 1876; president of the board of education; studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1878; member of the board of control of the State Industrial Home for Girls 1885-1897; was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1895-March 3, 1899); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1898; again appointed postmaster of Monroe, Mich., on February 20, 1899, and served until February 13, 1907; resumed the practice of law and also engaged in agricultural pursuits; president of the First National Bank of Monroe, Mich., until his death there September 13, 1915; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
