1- 1 Expressing regret at the passing of Mr. Hal Suit; and for
1- 2 other purposes.
1- 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Hal Suit passed away on November 20, 1994, at
1- 4 the age of 72, and he is mourned by his wife, Laura; three
1- 5 daughters, Sharon Suit, Susan Payne, and Melanie Langlois; a
1- 6 son, W. Dennis Suit; four grandchildren; a sister, Inez
1- 7 Holloway; and a host of friends and admirers; and
1- 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Suit was a combat veteran of World War II who
1- 9 served in three major campaigns and was twice wounded and
1-10 twice decorated for valor under fire, after which he
1-11 returned home and attended college at the University of
1-12 Florida and Rollins College in Florida; and
1-13 WHEREAS, for almost a half-century, Mr. Suit worked in both
1-14 the print and electronic media as a reporter, editor,
1-15 television anchor, commentator, and newspaper columnist,
1-16 and, in addition to covering hundreds of stories on the
1-17 changing South for the National Broadcasting Corporation
1-18 during the 1950's and 60's, he covered assignments which
1-19 took him over most of the world, including Europe, the
1-20 Middle East, and Central and South America; and
1-21 WHEREAS, in 1970, pursuing his dream of establishing a
1-22 two-party political system in Georgia, he sought and won the
1-23 Republican nomination for Governor and garnered 40 percent
1-24 of the vote against Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter; and
1-25 WHEREAS, with his death, the state has lost the benefit of
1-26 his unfailing integrity, his piercing insight, and his
1-27 common sense approach to life, and he will be missed
1-28 greatly.
1-29 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the
1-30 members of this body express regret at the passing of Mr.
1-31 Hal Suit and convey sincere condolences to his grieving
1-32 family and friends.
1-33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is
1-34 authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of
1-35 this resolution to Mrs. Laura Suit.
