InfoDr. Mark Edmund Duke Bainum

Dr. Duke Bainum, MD is a Maryland native and grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas. His father was a plumber and his mother and brother worked on the family chicken farm.

Bainum graduated from the University of Maryland in 1980 and fulfilled his internship requirements with the University of Hawaii's Surgical Residency Program at Queen's, St. Francis, Kaiser and Kuakini Medical Centers in Honolulu. For four months after internship, Bainum served as a humanitarian volunteer surgeon at Banepa Hospital in Nepal. Returning to America, he managed his own health clinics on the mainland.

Bainum returned to Hawai'i and became a member a member of the Government Affairs Committee for the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as legislative intern to Hawai'i State Senator Bert Kobayashi, then Health Committee Chairman.

Bainum took the plunge and ran for elected office - first to the McCully-Mo'ili'ili Neighborhood Board and then to the state legislature in 1990 representing Ala Wai and Waikiki in the State House.

Bainum's political career is highlighted by his service with the City and County of Honolulu as a councilman. As transportation chairman, he oversaw the modernization of the TheBus, selected by the American Public Transportation Association as the "Best Public Transit System in North America."
