David Porter was born at Fort Lewis, Washington in 1956 while his dad was serving in the military. He graduated from Harding University in May of 1977 with a BS degree Magna Cum Laude major in accounting. He passed the CPA exam on his first attempt in November of 1977. He married Cheryl Jenkins in 1979. They moved to Midland in April of 1981. David became certified as a Texas CPA in September of 1981. In July of 1985, Mr. Porter left the CPA firm in which he was a partner and started his own firm, David J. Porter PC, which he still operates today.
David Porter has been active in Conservative and Republican circles since being an officer in Young Americans for Freedom and a member of College Republicans while at Harding. He has worked as a volunteer in numerous campaigns at all levels from national to state to local. He has served as a delegate at several county and state Republican conventions. Mr. Porter served as an elected director of the Midland County Hospital District in 1989-91 (did not run for reelection) as well as precinct chairman in precinct 103 in Midland Co. and precinct 102 in Lee Co.
Mr. Porter’s past activities included serving as a Deacon of Fairmont Park Church of Christ in Midland, officer of Midland Jaycees, officer District 44 Toastmasters, leadership Midland, Junior Achievement and Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility (a local taxpayer activist group) His current memberships include Texas Land & Mineral Owners Association, life member NRA, Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance, Texas Society of CPA’s, American Institute of CPA’s, American Livestock Breeds Conservancy and Giddings Church of Christ.
David’s wife, Cheryl, a 1978 graduate of Harding University is a registered and licensed dietitian who was appointed to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Dietitians by Gov. Bill Clements and the Texas Diabetes Council by Gov. George W. Bush. They have one daughter, Jennifer Porter Brown, who is a 2000 graduate of Midland Christian School and received a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2004. She married Ryan in 2005. They have one daughter, Cosette, born in 2009.
The Porters now reside in rural Lee County between Giddings and Dime Box on land they purchased in 2004.
