| Info | Lorne grew up on a family farm near Wynyard, Saskatchewan and was educated at the University of Saskatchewan (Regina). He received a Bachelors degree in Political Science from the University of Saskatchewan, as well as a teaching certificate.
Lorne's political career began in 1968, when at the age of 22, he became the youngest Member of Parliament in Canada's history. Re-elected eight times, he has been serving his riding and his country in Parliament for 29 years. His long and varied career in Parliament includes responsibilities as New Democratic Party Justice critic, as well as New Democratic Party critic for Finance, Employment, Food and Agriculture, Trade, Regional Development and the Constitution.
In 1992, Lorne was appointed to the Privy Council, in the presence of the Queen. He is, along with the Right Hon. Joe Clark of the Progressive Conservatives, currently the only member of the Privy Council of any of the four opposition parties. Mr. Nystrom is a recipient of l'Ordre de la Pl�iade, an award of the French Republic.
Lorne has run for the national leadership of the New Democratic Party three times. He has chaired New Democratic Party task forces on Employment and Parliamentary Reform.
From 1993 - 1997, Lorne ran a successful consulting firm in Regina. Involved in several international projects on the political development of newly democratized countries, his efforts include projects in Russia on behalf of Harvard University, and in South Africa for the United Nations.
Lorne speaks before numerous audiences and for various organizations, in Canada and internationally on numerous issues. He is fighting for the Democratic reform of Parliament and of Canada's electoral system.
Re-elected in June 1997 and in November 2000 in the Riding of Regina-Qu'Appelle in Saskatchewan, Lorne is the NDP critic for Justice, the Solicitor General, Democratic Reform, Financial Institutions and Pensions, as well as the NDP's Deputy Whip.
More recently, Lorne has been promoting a tax on international monetary speculation and has succeeded in having Parliament vote in favor of his private member's motion supporting the "Tobin Tax". To help broaden support for the initiative, he has been invited to conferences in Europe, Brazil, and New York City.
He has released a book, Just Making Change, which makes difficult financial issues understandable to the reading public.
Lorne resides in Regina, Saskatchewan.
